Learn more about the cook Nerys Howell.
"I was born in Carmarthen and raised in Tonypandy, Rhondda. I now live in Radyr, Cardiff.
I started cooking when I was a child by helping my Grandmother on the farm in Saron, Llandysul, where we’d spend each school holiday. My Grandmother and my mother were the ones that inspired me to start cooking as they’d use fresh products from the farm (bacon, chicken, eggs, milk, wheat, vegetables and fruit etc) to feed the family, servants and farm workers. They’d be cooking and baking bread and cakes regularly, preparing jams and chutneys, home-made wine etc. And of course I’d help as much as I could – from collecting the eggs to turning the Christmas pudding!
The thing I like most about cooking on Wedi 3 is deciding which recipes to cook and having a chance to experiment with different foods. I hope to create interest in the viewers and urge them to go ahead and re-create the recipes and be creative in the kitchen.
My favourite food is chocolate! (I have a sweet tooth) and the food I dislike the most is rice pudding or any other similar pudding with milk – sago, semolina etc. It reminds me of being forced to eat them in primary school!
My favourite meal to cook is afternoon tea – it gives the chance to serve a range of savoury and sweet delicacy and I love cooking cakes and puddings!
I like using local products of the highest possible quality in a simple and healthy way without using too many ingredients to create light, clean and tasty meals!
My advice to the viewers at home is: prepare as much as you can beforehand, like the professional cooks do, what is called in the industry as ‘mis en place’ which is preparing elements of the recipe in good time before putting every aspect of the meal together at the last minute before serving. "
